Across the communities of Glasgow West

Story published on: February 21, 2025

With Parliament in recess it has been a great opportunity to catch up with some of the many fantastic local groups and organisations working across the communities of Glasgow West

Drumchapel Credit Union was the first credit union in Scotland and this year it is celebrating its 55th anniversary. It was lovely to be able to meet with some of the team to hear about the work they are doing. With over 3,000 members they provide a vital service to local people, and I’ve been very pleased to be able to recognise their work in a Parliamentary motion.

Local business are at the heart of our communities, and this is particularly true in the Byres Road area. So, it was great to meet John Turner, Chair of @Visit_WestEnd to discuss their work supporting local businesses in the Byres Road & Lanes area. With the Business Improvement District renewal ballot coming up, it’s vital to keep promoting and improving our West End. You can find out more: http://visitwestend.com

LINKES is a community project based in the Lincoln Avenue/Kestrel Road area of Knightswood. They offer a full programme of activities, from youth groups, to community support, to a lunch club. It was fantastic to meet with Elaine and Rachel from the project to find out more about their work. As they say, “they are a small team doing big things”!

It was also lovely to visit the Scottish Jewish Heritage Centre to meet with Chair Lionel Most and Centre Manager Kerry Patterson, and learn about the rich history of Glasgow’s Jewish community. The work of the Centre is vital to preserving and sharing this important heritage.
